The Impact of Eating Disorders

Evidence of the devastating impact of eating disorders is now being shared in a 2018-2019 report conducted by Harvard, the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), and Deloitte Access Economics.

What is the prevalence of eating disorders?

Eating disorders are a serious, sometimes deadly, mental health disorder impacting over 28 million Americans each year. Of this 28 million, over 6 million individuals are males and 14 million are females. Additionally, it was reported that over 1 million of eating disorders occur in children or adolescents under 10 years of age. At Toledo Center for Eating Disorders, we believe that recovery is possible, however; over 10,000 people die from complications because of eating disorders each year and unfortunately, this death toll continues to rise.

What is the financial impact of eating disorders?

Individuals suffering from eating disorders will often access health services from mental health professionals, physicians, nutritionists, and even hospital-based systems. The yearly economic cost of seeking professional care has reached over $64 million, which also includes pharmaceuticals, research, and higher levels of care such as residential and inpatient treatment.  According to this recent Harvard report, an estimated $4.6 billion was the total health system costs associated with eating disorders in 2018-2019, with Otherwise Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED) accounting for the largest share followed by Binge Eating Disorder and Anorexia Nervosa.
