Embracing Recovery in Everyday Life

What to do Once Eating Disorder Treatment is Over

At Toledo Center for Eating Disorders, our goal is sustained recovery and ensuring a foundation of a seamless continuity of care. We provide comprehensive aftercare planning and remain connected through appropriate continuing care coordination. Through aftercare planning, our dedicated team of professionals works collaboratively with clients and families to provide reputable resources and professional support for a lifetime. Our team also works diligently with our clients’ outpatient providers to offer weekly comprehensive treatment updates creating seamless continuity of care.

Along with appropriate continuing care coordination, it is important for clients and families to understand that flexibility, community connection, gratitude, and self-compassion are key factors in maintaining sustainable freedom from Eating Disorders,

Remaining Flexible

Maintaining recovery from Eating Disorders can be a challenging process. It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, stressed, or even a little afraid when returning home from a higher level of care. Taking it one moment at a time, while utilizing the tools and strategies learned during your stay will help you take the next steps toward long-term, sustainable recovery.

It is important to follow the recommendations collaboratively set with your treatment team regarding nourishment and plans to return to work or school. It is also important to note that returning to school or work looks different to everyone and it is perfectly fine to take additional time to focus on you and your recovery. Remaining flexible in your approach to daily life is key in continuing your recovery journey.

Community & Connection

Maintaining recovery means surrounding yourself with a supportive community. This could be your family, friends, your outpatient providers, church family, and even those in which you connected with during your treatment stay. No matter what, it is important to remain connected in your community, whether it be through virtual or in-person support groups, spiritual gatherings, online forums, or scheduled check-in calls.

Given the current state of our world, many support groups are being held through a virtual platform to continue to meet the needs of clients and families. National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA), The National Association of Anorexia and Related Disorders (ANAD), Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness, and EDIN are a few organizations offering virtual support groups throughout the globe. Let’s face it, we all need community, especially during a time of transition, which is why surrounding yourself with a supportive network is crucial to sustained recovery.
